Michael Phelps earned a place in sports history recently as the first U.S. men’s swimmer to qualify for five Olympic Games. Over three Olympics, from 2004 through 2012, Michael Phelps had won 18 gold medals and 22 medals overall, each total more than anyone ever. It’s a phenomenal level of achievement by any stretch of the imagination.
I will renew my commitment to be more determined than ever to grow my skills and abilities and vigorously train and practice to make it a reality
However, just two years ago, Phelps was earning headlines for other reasons: smoking pot, getting a DUI, losing sponsors, and heading to rehab. For almost five days in the fall of 2014, the most decorated Olympian in history lay curled in a fetal position in his Baltimore home embarrassed at his behavior and uncertain of his future. As we prepare to watch him again in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio, we are reminded of two of the principles that led to his resurgence and drive all top performing professionals to consistently improve.
- The strongest muscle in your body is a determined mind. Whether you have been gifted with the ability to swim or the ability to sell, a large amount of your success will depend on how determined you are to succeed. Overcoming customer objections is easy if you have been successful in identifying and overcoming the things that have been holding you back from maximizing your abilities to help customers. If you have a dogged determination to maximize production, help customers at extraordinary levels and greet each new month with an intrinsically better perspective than the previous one, then you will succeed. The oft-repeated statement “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right” is correct.
- He knew his best days were ahead of him not behind him, because no matter how talented and successful he had been, he was determined that tomorrow he would be even better. It would have been easy for him to accept past success and remain content with his 22 Olympic medals. However, instead of focusing on how great he had been in the past, he once again began a relentless and vigorous training program. He pushed himself to reach new levels and set his goal on achievements higher than those already accomplished. That’s what champions do! Professionals practice, vigorously train to improve and are never satisfied with yesterday’s accomplishments.
I’ll be cheering every time I watch Michael Phelps compete this summer. And as I do, I will renew my commitment to be more determined than ever to grow my skills and abilities and vigorously train and practice to make it a reality. Join me!
